Car seat economics
There were no car seats for babies when mine were infants. Now I get to install and uninstall mechanisms any astronaut would be proud of each time I take my grandkids out for ice cream. (It’s proved economical as there are a hell of a lot less trips.  )
I think it would be safer, both for the driver from being distracted, and the kid in the event of an accident, if you put them in the trunk. You could tie them to the roof when they get bigger.
