Coming of Age

Years before anyone had thought of the WWW, a Dr. Mockapetris came up with the Domain Name System (DNS) system while he was working on the Arpanet project, which was the forerunner of the internet. Twenty one years ago, back in 1983, he created the system which gives addresses names such as ".com" and ".org". Now that IPv6 is coming on-line, he thinks that all communication will be over the net, and we will no longer need phone numbers, just web addresses.

Dr. Mockapetris now works for a private firm.

It is thanks to Dr. Mockapetris that we don't have to remember addresses like 192.158.1.102

The toddler is indeed walking without holding onto the coffee table, but far from coming of age. Our thanks to men like Dr. Mockapetris and the unnamed that are following. I believe the spring of evolution has been released by people like him, but is merely building momentum that even he will wonder at.

HOW do you people KNOW this stuff???

TY for telling those of us (me) who had never heard of Dr. Mockapetris. Very interesting bit of information. Although I'll never remember any of it should it ever be a Trivia game question. Are you sure thats not a James Bond character?

Just as this golden era of communication is really starting, a new breed of

spoilers is coming up with viruses to keep us out of it.

Go figure.

How would the viruses propogate if you weren't able to communicate?

DNS has been quite an advancement over the previous method of every system on the Arpanet having its administrator retrieve a hosts table in a text file from Stanford, but I really don't think the toddler will make it past adolescence. Then again, IPv4 wasn't supposed to still be around now, so there you go.
