Bibi: The one book is entitled "Ghost Towns of Ontario", by Ron Brown, published by Polar Bear Press. I can give you an ISBN to search on if that helps.
The other book we brought back, but I've not read (well, re-read actually) in a while is A Short History of Canada by Desmond Morton.

Let's see, what do I know about Canada, eh?
It's NOT all 'frozen white North"!!
And yes, Scotz, Windsor IS South of Detroit! That's the only place where Canada is actually South of the U.S.
Don't order POUTINE for your french fries!
Their cigarettes cost too darn much, even after figuring in the exchange rate on the money.
They sell milk in plastic bags! They have a cereal named SHREDDIES!!!
Canadian paper money is very pretty! Each denomination is a different color. Their $1 and $2 coins (Loonies and Two-nies) really weigh your purse/pocket down!!
Canada has produced some wonderful comedians...John Candy, Rich Little, Dan Ackroyd, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Mike Myers and the list goes on...and on. Also some excellent actors...Michael J. Fox, Richard Dean Anderson, Lorne Greene, and others. Singers, Paul Anka, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Alanis Morisette, The Guess Who, and more. TV shows Kids in the Hall, You Can't Do That on Television. Newscaster Peter Jennings. And yes, I know some of these performers are dead.
Canadian's invented Trivial Pursuit!
When you shop at Candadian Tire, you get Canadian Tire Money with your change. Save enough and you can spend it back in the store. WhoooHOoo!! And yes there is a difference between Canadian Tire Money and Canadian Money.
You don't pay an electric or gas bill. You pay a "hydro" bill.
Tim Horton's makes great donuts!
Those of us who are/were blessed to live close enough to Canada to get the CBC broadcasts know how much better their Olympic coverage is. And Long Live HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA, including Ron Maclean (sp?)
They gave us Don Cherry.......love him or hate him, he's fun to watch, if for nothing else then at least to see what he's wearing this week!
Last, but definitely NOT least............................................. ...
CANADA gave us the WORLD'S GREATEST SPORT ..............HOCKEY !!!!
And for that I am forever grateful!!![

Canada is a spectacular place to live! Yes we do have our problems, just like in any other country! But like you, we learn to live with what we are dealt and make the best of it!!
I am proud to be a Canadian!! Pass me a Coors light please!!

Spoken like a true Texan :)
Yep, our winters can be cold. Two winters ago, I was living in my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. We broke our record snowfall that was set in the late 1800s! We had to hire back hoes to remove some snow because none of it was melting and we would have had to hire catapults to keep shovelling.
Just a note - I was living in a border town for a year and I went to a bar across the border in Minnesota. The differences I found of course were the money - I like our colourful currency - how do Americans tell their twenties from their ones in a dim bar?, their washrooms are bigger, their beer is weaker and their cigarettes are different!

Just a slight correction. The Southern Coast of BC seldom has sonow and if they do it does not last for long but the Interior and Northern BC have their fair share and the Skiiing is world class!

And SS - in terms of Canuck comics - you forgot JIM CARREY!
Saw him on Canadian TV doing stand up when I was growing up. Maybe being north of the U.S. and knowing so much about the states, we're able to make fun of our big superpower to the south.

Wow, SS covered everything I knew and taught me a bit on top. So what I don't know is how long it has been independent from the UK, anyone?

Wonderful to see this thread grow.....Thanks to you all!!!
I just couldn't let someone ask me where Canada was and get away with it LMAO
hmmm.....Tim Hortons ... established in Hamilton Ontario in 1964 by a former cop Ron Joyce and Tim Hortons. My dad did the plumbing on the first store on Ottawa Street. Now we seem to have one of these establishments on every second corner.....lots that are just drive throughs too. BTW cops get free coffee at Timmys.......you can more often than not see one driving in to get their freebie!
If you are inclined to hang out at a Hortons Coffee shop you will garner the name " Tim Bit Rider" and what is a Tim Bit???? It is the hole in the donut. What a marketing dream come true that was!!!!
Tim Horton was killed in a single car accident just down the highway from here years ago....can't recall the year now though!
And Joyce's daughter ended up marrying Horton's son.
Ron Joyce and Dave Thomas of Wendy's fame merged together a few years back.......and became quite the conglomerate(sp) lol
AND FYI Dave Thomas started out by being an owner of one of Colonel Saunders franchises!
