Happy Boxing Day

We don't understand what it is, but we don't understand your pladdepussy either. We only know it's a big day in Oz. So have a happy one and put a bet on the big guy for me.

Good guess but I'd heard somewhere it goes back to merry ol' England and relates to one of the saints. Is that right OF?

All I know about it is that my half-sister (who was adopted by an English father & Irish mother) calls me every year to wish me Happy Boxing Day...

The fact that 12/26 was also our mother's b-day usually comes up as well.

It is a British Commonwealth holiday, what's left of St Steven's Day mixed with the Saturnalia, reinforced by the Gods of Commerce. In short, it's the magic day for returning unwanted or surplus presents and imitating Black Friday.

I think retailers in the US are trying really hard to get it established here too.

You learn something new everyday!

I didn't know it wasn't a widely known day, I thought Boxing Day was Boxing Day everywhere there was a Christmas Day

One theory is to do with the opening of Christmas Boxes - these were what the rich contributed things to, and the boxes were opened by the poor the day after Christmas, presumably because many of the poor worked as servants for the rich, and were therefore required on Christmas Day and wouldn't have had time to open their boxes. In church, the Alms Boxes were contributed to voluntarily by churchgoers and the boxes were opened the day after Christmas and the contents distributed amongst the poor.

I've heard tipping being referred to as a Christmas Box, and I always remember my mother tipping people such as the dustbin men, postman, milkman, newspaper boy/girl and anyone else who did that kind of 'service' throughout the year - they got a Christmas Box, a tip, at Christmas I presume this is what jseal was referring to up here.

Being a Google-aholic, I have just Googled and found quite a good explanation on Snopes. There are a number of theories as to where the name came from, all of which seem feasible to me: click here to learn more about Boxing Day

In Ireland it is referred to as St Stephen's Day, although that is always on 26th December, whereas, in England at least, Boxing Day is moveable to the following Monday or Tuesday, if 26th falls on a weekend.

Actually while it is not well known in the USA, Pixies that have been here for a year or two do know of Boxing Day. Each year we have fun with it and especially like to poke at those down-under pladdypussy folks about it.
Thanks for the Boxing Day link. Now we even know a bit more about it.

Did I forget to mention that pladdypussies can be trained to eat panty collections if they feel set apon?

Wiki refers to Boxing Day in parts of America, not the Canadian ones.
