I like these games. I'll give it a shot.

It may be Des Noir, it is a pretty common last name for french decents in America/Canada. Since coming to the Americas the last name took on new spellings such as Des Noyer, De Noir, etc.. So the spelling may be a little off from school book french, but it is all trackable to the original family name of Des Noir, roughly translated that means Of Blacks. Name legend translates it to People of the Night. Interesting sidenote that one of the miss spellings translates to 'Of Drowning'.

That would be my first guess.

Any other hints? Ethnicity? Location? Etc..
