"Age ain't nuthin' but a number...." (long post)

Most of us have heard this dandy little old addage, right? Dear friends, I am having a very difficult time with this year's age. As you may recall, in a few days it is my birthday, and I am looking forwards to it like one would look forward to having novocane-free dental work done whilst systematically having all of one's toenails ripped out AT the same time. Even the weather forecast for my area reflects my mood, stormy and overcast. I feel like I should be going to a funeral.

I had a mini-birthday anxiety thing 5 years ago when I knew I only had five years left of being in my twenties, and that I was one quarter of a century. (my younger brother went through the same thing, perhaps this is heriditary???) In a few days, my twenties will be dead, poof, gone, just fading memories.

Good grief! I AM NOT MATURE ENOUGH YET TO BE IN MY 30'S...My brain says that i am still 18...just with the added responsibilities of being a parent chucked in there.

I set great store into birthdays and I think that out of all the days of the year, that one day, the day that you transitioned from the womb to dry land, should be YOUR day, your day to have attention and you be selfish, screw the diet, and if you are of legal age to have a good screw. Birthday should be spelled BirthMEday, in my book. And it MUST be celebrated ON your birth date and not the nearest weekend for convienience. This year, huh uhhh, somebody else can have it. I'll stay 29, thank-you-verra-much.

I was supposed to go on a 6 hour drive to go see, and "mini-vacation" at their home, some really good friends of mine. It has been at tradition that I spend my birthday with them, unless I am working, or, um, out of the country and spending it with Mayhem. Can't happen this year due to several factors. We all are bummed about it. Our little Mini-party before the Fourth of July party and picnic and fireworks.

So this year, I predict that I will get a lovely bunch of flowers and a card from the folks, we will go clean their church like we always do on Thursdays, and go out to eat like we always do on Thursdays. It will be rainy and horrible out so my kids can't play outside, and they'll be rotten little buggers. I will grow porcupine needles out my back, Sabre-tooth fangs, and the disposition of a badger or wolverine--i haven't decided which one yet--don't touch me, don't hug me, don't look at me....and I will cry, and cry most of the day.

I *know* that I am still young yet, but my white hairs both on my head and ...yes, and the newly found white pubic hairs, say that I am not.

So after reading my long winded pity party: (thank you for making it this far)

Did you ever have an unhappy birthday?
Did NOT want to be wished a happy birthday?
A specific age that you didn't want to turn?
Birthday anxiety?
......or am I a complete nutter and just need to be in a padded room?

I didn't realize it or at least I didn't think I did, but my wife said she thought when I turned forty, I suffered a bit of "over the hill" syndrome or something. Oh well, like Lixy said, it's been okay since then.

I hated 25 as well. I generally don't make a big fuss of my birthday or anyone else's for that matter.

Well I'm 33 now and the past few years...well I guess since I turned 30, I hate hearing all the "happy birthday, oh let's get you a cake" big deal here at home and with family. Like I just want to hide and cry instead.

30 killed me. I felt just like you. I know it won't help but I have to tell you I have actually loved my 30's. During my 30's I have discovered who I am. I thought I knew before but as this decade has been passing by I realize how much the insecurities of my youth have faded, how much more sure I am when someone asks what I think about something (and even when they don't ask).

While I will fully support your mooning and moping, I know you will make your 30's the decade of you.

Like a bunch of others, 30 never bothered me...25 did, because I couldn't think of it as "25", but rather, "1/4 of a century".

Individual years since then have ocdcasionally bothered me, but not because of any particular year or milestone, just because my life happened to suck right about then.

Lilith may be on the right track here, though...if you moon the rest of us, that may put you back in the right mood.

I'm not looking forward to #100, a century. Now that is old. 25 puff, 50 did that. Now 100, three digits. You just wait an see what a bummer that will be.

With the release of Pirates, there's been a lot of Johnny Depp footage played. One of the best things I heard was his response, in an older interview, to the question "How does it feel to turn 30?".

His response? "Ten years is enough time to spend in your Twentys."

Interestingly enough, maturity doesn't seem to be a requisite to having a birthday. I went thru a rough time around my 40th, but it was about what was going down at the time, not the # of candles on my cake...now that I can look back on a half-century (something I assure you I don't yet feel mature enough to do), I've found it oddly liberating...but again, that's more about what I've been thru, & found myself still standing...

Am I fighting the urge to tell ya to "get over it?"...hmmm, maybe...

I didn't like it when I turned 30. That was a very depressing day for me. I really didn't like turning 38. That was a very ugly sounding number to me. But, I did adore turning 40 this year. Age is just a number and it's the mindset you have that makes all the difference.

Thanks guys! I know mooning, moping and whining doesn't normally sound like me, so thank you for letting me this once.

I am comforted that I am not the only one that has had difficulties with certain ages. your support is awesome. (((Pixies)))

I don’t pay attention to the number if candles on my cake any more. That’s the fire departments job.

I have watched people anguish at passing different decade points with true bewilderment until the word sixty was actually said out loud. I really could not equate to it. That is just a number that doesn’t have anything to do with me. That’s an old fucks’ age. The kind of people you cut in half and count the rings. “30”, “40”, even that half century could not have had less significance for me until I slammed into the hexagon wall. It was like telling me I was Chinese or 7 ft. tall. It’s just not me!

If age is just a number, I’ll let you know when my concept of numbers gets adjusted.
