Question Australian ~ Qld new hoon laws

Quote:
Hoons to face new laws

QUEENSLAND drivers who try to evade police, sparking high-speed pursuits, will soon face permanent confiscation of their vehicle, a fine of up to $15,000 and jail.

Premier Peter Beattie said the changes to the Criminal Code, which would be introduced into state parliament next week, would ensure Queensland was the first state in Australia to introduce a specific law for evading police.
"This change is about protecting innocent people, especially other road users who (are) put at risk during high-speed chases and the police officers forced to conduct them," he said.

Research by the Crime and Misconduct Commission showed pursuits were most likely to be committed by males under 30 years of age who were unlicensed and had consumed alcohol or drugs.

Last year there were 562 police pursuits, including at least one involving a fatality.

Under the new laws, people charged with evading police will face a fine of up to $15,000 or three years jail.

For a first offence, their vehicle will be impounded for three months, but on a subsequent offence they will face permanent forfeiture.
Other changes to the state's Criminal Code will involve the introduction of new offences designed to protect Queensland's police officers from physical assaults by offenders biting or spitting.

I think its great...what say you?

If I used any of my fire-arms in a way which placed the community at risk, they should be taken from me and me be spanked.

Why are these little shits any different?

What will be interesting is when it's Mum's car that's impounded for 3 months, costing her the only job she knows and a vital income stream for the family.

That was my question sort of^^^.

Are many of the cars used in a pursuit stolen? If soe then it's not as big of a deterrent.

I'm pretty sure only the hoons personal car would be impounded

We dont have the rate of cars stolen like the US has...most that are stolen end up as parts more than for joyriding (not saying it doesnt happen of course)

Young bucks/buckettes in their 'hotted up pig magnets', that think its their god given right to drive like maniacs through built up areas, will be the main targets

Oh thank goodness!

I thought they passed new POON laws! Phew!

Who exactly would be the one responsible for keeping it for three months? And how would it be stored? Would there be any kind of periodic exercising, to keep the fluids circulating now and again? I have a lot of questions cus I would definately have my um, "vehicle" impounded for traveling much too fast when involved with poon.

I imagine it would go to a police impounding yard

As for keeping the fluids circulating, i dunno *L*....they may go out and run em for a bit

But if lost indefinately the impounders would sell them i'd say

Sounds well-intentioned to me as well, but my first thought is also that the worst offenders are often the ones "driving it like they stole it," because they did just that...at the end of the chase, the vehicle is usually headed for the junkyard anyway...I wonder if QLD has a plan B for those situations, or is this just another PR move to make everybody think their govt. is looking out for them? < rhetorical question alert >

I think the law is great and I hope it does some good......not long ago, Catch and I were walking up to the shops when a hoon goes racing thru a round-about.....he lost control and fish-tailed it up on the curb hitting a sign.....fortunately, he hit no other car and the footpath was deserted at that moment.....it could have been a truly tragic moment as that spot is right beside a school where kids are walking each morning and afternoon.

Just makes me shudder to think about it!!
