Do you think it's true that...

"absence makes the heart grow fonder"?


or is it just typically a case of ...

"familiarity breeds contempt"?

I think that absence does make the heart grow fonder, to a certain extent. I can totally miss someone for awhile, but after then I need to know when they are coming back.....and if I should move on!!

Yes CGT...but only if you know the bastards are coming back. More often than not they dont.

I don't mean to seem flip... but... in my experience it depends on who it is that's absent. With one man it was clearly a case of "absence makes the heart go wander"... but with the man I'm with now (who is on an extended business oriented trip, and has so far been gone over 6 weeks), it's without a doubt "absence makes the heart grow fonder"

As for familiarity... it can definitely breed contempt, whether the one in question is away or close by.... but again it depends on the "who".

I'm with flutelady on this one.....in the past, for me at least 'Out of sight, out of mind' has been a more appropriate saying, however in my current relationship, absence did seem to make the heart grow fonder.

Having said that, now Fussy lives with me, I find myself more in love with him than ever, so I'm not sure if that necessarily holds true either! Perhaps it's just that being with a beautiful person makes the heart grow fonder.

After all these years with Mr. Lix.....there are times when I HAVE to send him away just to test the theory of absense on the heart!

Day 1...Ahhhhhh! This king size bed is nice!

Day 2...I'm staying in my jammies all day! *ring, ring* (telephone)..."Oh, hi honey! Yes...I've been up since dawn (slept in till the crack of noon) and did the grocery shopping and cleaned everything in sight (blows dust off the phone base). Nope...haven't been on the puter all day!"

Day 3...Actually does the grocery shopping! Lying in bed at night, I hear a strange noise.........eeeeeekkkkk!

Day 4..."I'll see you in a couple of hours babe. I miss you!" I clean what I said was cleaned before and finally shower and dress.....and when he pulls in the driveway I run out the door and into his arms and kiss him like it's our first kiss!

It's nice for a while when he is gone.....but it's even nicer when he returns!

I think absence adds clarity to the relationship...you either end up loving them more, or feeling releived when they're gone. Also, you learn a bit about yourself...if you're jealous, or lazy, etc.

Abstinence makes the heart go find 'er.
