The Peoria area was originally settled in 1680 by the explorer LaSalle. He built a fort on the bluffs overlooking the Illinois River called Fort Creve Coeur. The picture is of the monument erected to commerate that settlement. There's a reconstruction of a fort similar to the one he built about a mile from this site, but the road back to it is closed until later in the day. I'll have to take a picture of it one of these days.

Finally, I thought the sunrise as I was driving home was kind of neat ... with the clouds and all (it rained last night).
Til' later .... that'll do for now. |

Thanks all. It is nice to see where people live.

This is where I'm "living" at the moment. The country itself is beautiful- mountains, rolling hills, trees...
This mountain is called "Big Duke" by us "tourists". :D It is especially beautiful at sunset. Actually it is just across the border of Macedonia. |
Unfortunately the natives here don't exactly play well with others, so this is what the majority of the country looks like...
Still bombed out, barb wire, rubble, land mines... |
Darogle, isn't it a shame that people spend so much time hating when there's so much, so close to love and enjoy? Thanks. Neat picture of the mountain. I think I saw a similar view on a news show.

This is a neat thread! Like I had said before, we have to do a little traveling in order to see our local sites. Below are just a few of attractions that are somewhat close to us...
www.surfballroom.com The surf was the last venue that Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens played. The plane that they were traveling in crashed into a farm field - there is also a memorial there as well. http://www.themusicmansquare.org/ The Music Man Square is really a neat place. Meridith Wilson hailed from "River City" and this museum is a nice tribute to him and his works. http://www.traveliowa.com/thingstod...amana_colonies/ The Amana Colonies is a really neat place to visit. Lots of historical info, and you can see how a small community survived during the pioneer times...really neat place. http://www.meskwaki.com/ For those who like to gamble... :D http://www.traveliowa.com/thingstodo/attractions/ As there are too many to mention - this is the link to the Iowa Tourism Site... our area is North Central Iowa. |

At least you got a pic of the deer DB, my daughter and I went up on Cliff Hill and after snaping a pic a deer came right up next to us. I of course forgot about the camera in my hand. I think my daughter wanted to smack me for not getting a pic. LOL.
Well I live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Sorry this pic is not really what I wanted, but I only had a cheap digital to take pics with. I'll borrow my sis's camera and get some better ones sometime. This pic was taken north in town up on Cliff Hill. Sioux Falls is so spread out I could never get it all in one pic. We are now over 135,000 peeps in town and just seem to keep growing. This website offers some info on Sioux Falls, if you click information at the top it has alot of neat stuff. On the right side of that page if you scroll down there is a link for Webcam and Multimedia. If you click that you can see our Falls, which is the next pic I have. www.siouxfalls.org Another website about Sioux Falls has a link that you can get visitor info mailed to you. www.siouxfallscvb.com Sioux Falls was founded in 1856. The Big Sioux river runs thru town, which is where our Falls come from. At the Falls is a couple of historcal sites. There is the remains of The Sioux Falls Light and Power company and the Queen Bee Mill. The S.F. Light and Power Company building will be a restraunt soon. We have a lot of great parks in town, inclueding swimming, picnics, butterfly house, I could go on and on, but I've probably babled enough. So that's a little peice of my little part of South Dakota. Of course there is always Mt. Rushmore in the Black Hills on the other side of the state. But if anyone is planning on coming thru SD and needs info on where to get info, just PM me and I'll be glad to get you websites and phone numbers. |
Wicked mountain, darogle. And just think, it seems like yesterday that you wrote you had 54 days to go. :D

Well, I am sorry but I must tell you I could not find just 3 pics so forgive me. Our state is so diverse that I wanted to show as many sides of it as possible. I hope you enjoy!
Here we have the ocean beaches, the mountains, and yes even desert (which is where I live). They are all beautiful.....I am afraid I do not have any pics showing the rain forest as of yet. The state website is www.experiencewashington.com |
