Yep. I have in the past and loved it. Not too many chances around here. Usually the ice doesn't really get thick enough and when it does it's in the middle of a -20F cold spell. :( The northern half of Minnesota is the place to go.

When we first moved into our house we started a fair-sized garden but after a couple of years, we gave it up. Our neighbor had a much larger one and was too good about sharing. (I'm not much of a gardener so that didn't hurt my feelings.)
