Being home sick.

Lord Snow 01-10-2011 04:38 PM

Having to go in to work today when none of the roads were plowed. Then when I got there over the half the crew didn't show. That includes those that showed up late.

rabbit 01-10-2011 08:32 PM

Watching "The Worst Cooks in America".

Truly Pitiful, just pitiful. And pathethic. No excuse for it.

shadowsfate 01-23-2011 02:08 PM

Saying goodbye to my son as he (temporarily) moves to his moms. Hardest thing I've ever had to do, but with my health issues and his current problems, I can't take care of him like he needs, and his mother will be able to do a lot to help him get back to where he needs to be

PantyFanatic 01-23-2011 03:03 PM

The Blackhawks. :(

Oldfart 01-23-2011 05:19 PM

Absolutely wonderful comic book heroes, oh, um, the other Blackhawks.

dicksbro 01-23-2011 05:21 PM

The Chicago Bears offense so far. I wonder if in watching the tapes before the game they were accidently watching the Cubs? :(

Pita 01-28-2011 06:30 PM

Finding out that my favorite supervisor had a miscarriage. Life sure can suck the big one! :(

sodaklostsoul 07-27-2011 06:40 PM

Throwing out some of our stuff cause it got wet even when we had it off the floor. There was so much water in the garage the stuff are stuff was sitting on was floating. :(

Lord Snow 07-27-2011 09:15 PM

Ewww.....Really sorry to hear that.

dicksbro 07-28-2011 04:50 AM

The Weather Channel suggesting today's high will be near 95F. Enough is enough. :(

More anti-Muslim polemicists claiming that Islam requires women to wear a burqa.

Lord Snow 07-30-2011 01:35 PM

I thought Islam was the culture/people and Muslim was their religion. If that's the case then I do believe traditions of the culture/people require the burqa, though I don't think the religion does. I could be wrong, I don't know much about either.

Oldfart 07-30-2011 09:39 PM

Mostly the culture and the religion are inextricably entwined.

The berka is supposedly the woman's choice, but if hubby is demanding, obedience rules.

Lord Snow 07-31-2011 08:47 AM

Throughout history in many countries religion and culture are like that.

PantyFanatic 07-31-2011 09:02 AM

Historically, religion and culture have been evolving things with religion always being behind.

AZRedHot 08-03-2011 09:56 AM

Waking up so stiff I could barely move. Again.

Oldfart 08-03-2011 06:29 PM

There isn't a winning return comment to that one.

Lord Snow 08-03-2011 08:34 PM

I'd be more than happy to rub those kinks and entertain any others you might have AZ.

Nope. I got a referral to a rheumatologist from my doc; her first available appointment? Mid-October.

Gee, thanks.

Sold! That sounds pretty nice.

Lord Snow 08-04-2011 10:34 PM

Sounds like I found the winning return comment........ I swear, Route 66 is looking better and better.

Oldfart 08-05-2011 05:44 PM

Better than 65 or 67?

Sorry, Aussie joke.

Some news about our local college coach's 6 year old. He has a rare blood disease, that I just happened to have read about earlier in the day as my kiddo is going to be needing to see a hematologist, so I had been studying up.

Yes, I know. Scary shit... :(

Fangtasia 08-14-2011 01:39 AM

Watching some cancelled old TV shows that i wish were still being made today

Lilith 08-30-2011 04:53 AM

When I got to work Monday I found that someone had broken into our portables and stolen our laptops. All of the work I have done for this year including the countless weekend hours is gone. I had not backed anything up yet. It was full of things I just can't recreate easily. The damn thing was over ten years old and not worth anything but I really needed the contents.

jseal 08-30-2011 04:57 AM

Lilith,

Sorry to learn of this! Best of lock on recovering all you can. :console:

Oldfart 08-30-2011 06:42 AM

Bastards.

PantyFanatic 08-30-2011 07:01 AM

:gb:

Oldfart 08-30-2011 07:44 AM

Yep.

Oldfart 09-10-2011 10:57 PM

Cliff Roberson has left the building.

dicksbro 09-11-2011 04:42 AM

Lilith, sorry to hear about the theft. Hopefully the people responsible will be caught and punished and that by some wild accident, the materials you need will still be there.

jseal 02-28-2012 09:25 PM

Well, I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. Still ...

Oldfart 02-28-2012 11:46 PM

This is a bigger minefield than the DMZ.

At what point do you draw the line in eugenic euthanasia? 10yo, 20yo, red-head, over 50?

It gives me the shivers.

jseal 02-29-2012 07:39 PM

It is astonishing to read what academics can dream up, isn’t it?

At times it's tempting to abort my 12 year old "fetus". Could I also abort someone else's 51 year old one?

Oldfart 03-01-2012 07:00 PM

Some people would kill for the right of post-partum abortion.

Oldfart 03-01-2012 07:30 PM

Some of the people who are reporting Science stories, yet lack the science knowledge to understand the story.

A current story goes thusly:-

Baby coral can clone, researchers say
By Natalie Poyhonen
Updated March 02, 2012 09:35:31

During the experiments, about half of the fertilised coral eggs broke into smaller fragments.

Marine scientists in north Queensland have discovered baby coral on the Great Barrier Reef can clone itself before developing into adult coral.

The team from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in Townsville set out to research what happens to fragile coral embryos when they fragment during different wave conditions.

Unlike most animal embryos, the coral does not have a protective outer layer.

Dr Andrew Negri says during the experiments, which mimicked wave heights during coral spawning, about half of the fertilised coral eggs broke into smaller fragments.

"If there are choppy conditions in the ocean, this would be enough to break the coral embryos apart and create smaller coral clones," he said.

Dr Negri says it is just one of the strategies used to reproduce and could help its long-term survival.

"By having such fragile embryos maybe this increases the number of larvae that are available to settle," he said.

"But it could be that producing a different size range or wider size range of different embryos and larvae may help them as well - may help them to get into smaller nooks and crannies and settle and attach and avoid predators."

Hereby endeth the story.

What has not been understood by the reporter is that corals, like their cousins the jellyfish and the hydras are not animals, but colonies of closely related beasties. If the fragment contains enough of all the types of beasties, it can grow into a complete polyp.

Lord save us from hemi-comprehension.

Sad that I didn't catch up with TinglingTess before I leave for the weekend. Everyone please give her birthday hugs from me!!!!

Lord Snow 03-03-2012 04:05 PM

I'm going to borrow this thread and slightly change it to "what pissed me off within the past 48 hour".

I had to bust my ass at work for some big wigs that are coming through this week, so they made us work 5 days at 8 hours instead of 4 days at 10 hours so I lost a day off.

I got a rejection letter from a possible job that would have paid me a hell of a lot more money after waiting almost a month for some word from them. (The letter was written on the 29th and delivered on the 2nd).

I've felt like shit for two days straight and it's from a combination of allergies and possibly a cold.

Because my cousin is moving out there is a huge mess in the downstairs and he's been up very late for a few days in a row making it hard for me to sleep.

And this morning my ranchero decided she no longer wanted to start.
