Darkness falls across the land..the midnight hour is close at hand...

It's almost that time....Halloween.... and I was wondering, what scared the crap out of you when you were a child?

For me, dispite the fact that now I am a lover of all things horror, books..movies... when I was a child I was a wus. lol...One of the things I remember scaring the hell out of me was the video..and subsequently the song Thriller by Michael Jackson.

I was convinced because of the one part where it says "for who so ever shall be found, without the soul for getting down, must stand and face the hounds of hell...ect" that if I didn't listen to the radio all night long that the monsters from the video would come and get me. So I'd turn on the radio when I went to sleep. Then Mom would come in and turn it off when she'd go to bed. I'd wake up in the middle of the night to find my monster protection was turned off and lose it. lol

So what scared the crap out of you?

I was so afraid of the witch in The Wizard of Oz........and then later.....the movie The Exorcist! NOTHING before that....and NOTHING since....has scared me more than those two things! They are the things that created my "monster under the bed" theory.....and they were my monsters! Matter of fact.....I still get the heebie jeebies when I see The Exorcist....but I watch to conquer my fear! I'm over being scared of the witch in Oz......but whenever I see it (her) it takes me back to the time when I was freaked!

Lilith 10-11-2003 11:14 AM

I am with Lixy on the Excorcist and must add Carrie:o

I can't even watch The Exorcist...I tried and couldn't even get through it. I got to one scene in particular and ws just disgusted...so I had to turn it off.

Speaking of witches...the Snow White Witch freaked me out too..the bug eyed creepy apple giving witch.. *shudder*

Creature Feature (especially creature from the black lagoon), and I had some pretty damn scary comic books when I was a kid. Tales from the Crypt, Weird War Tales, etc...

The first time I watched The Exorcist I was at home alone in a house way out in the woods, and during the movie we had an Earthquake! A real one! I almost lost my mind when that happened, thought my house was possessed. I still watch it from time to time now and laugh...

I'm with PF on Thriller...MJ scares the hell out of me still.

What scared me the most when I was young?
Probably the lions running around near my house. I was born in Africa and outta of the 5 places I lived at, one of them was right in the middle of lion country!:O

I'm like Lilith, everything scared the living daylights out of me, to this day i get scared on darkrides and haunted houses. it's horrible

Okay, as all know I am the resident Vampyre.... But what scared me as a child was....... Super Grover from Seaseme Street. I don't know why, but something about the fact that he could fly and come to my house was enough. I could handle all the ghost stories, the Exorcist, even Thriller... but not Super Grover.

I was and still am scared of the dark...or more to the point what can hide in it!!

celticangel 10-12-2003 02:27 PM

I was terrified of the Queen video for Bohemian Rhap~~~~~~~can't even type it for "flashbacks"!!!!!!!!!!

BIBI 10-13-2003 01:11 AM

That "thing" that was just waiting for me to hang my hand over my bed. To this day I still never hang my feet or hands over the side of the bed.....that is at sleepy time I mean :)

Another thing that still creeps me out is the old black and white movie called "The Haunting". I was 17 when I saw it and the damn movie upset me so much I had to crawl in bed with my mom. There was no blood or gore...it was just plain creepy.

dicksbro 10-13-2003 04:39 AM

When I was a kid, I think walking at night in a dark area where shadows played all around me. Gave me the jitters.

Now, it's mainly heights when I'm out in the open (as opposed to being in a building or on an airplane).

From all I've heard, The Exorcist probably would have, but I've never had the desire to watch it.

Well I'd actually recommend it, dicksbro - a very well done film I think. I saw it when I was about 20, and it was a little scary, yes, but I didn't think it was as horrific as I'd heard. I think it would have been really scary when it came out in the 70s, but nowadays I'm a little desensitised I think.

A very powerful, classic film. Worth a look I think.
