Transitions - Colin Powell

Secretary of State Colin Powell is resigning to return to private life. He’ll be missed.

WildIrish 11-15-2004 01:24 PM

Hope he takes his son with him.

osuche 11-15-2004 04:01 PM

Damn straight he will be missed. We woulda gone to hell in a handbasket without his tireless work behind the scenes. I'm a bit worried about who might fill his shoes......Condi????? PLEASE. :p

He is a great man and I hope he goes on to do more great things.

osuche,

No way! That would be a uncomfortable development indeed.

Galatea 11-15-2004 06:14 PM

Actually, I've heard that is IS going to be Condi.

edit: I lied....she's going to be secretary of defence is what I heard.

jseal 11-15-2004 06:25 PM

Galatea,

Well, crazier things have happened before, but I would be less surprised to see her heading up State than DOD.

All we have to do is wait to find out...

Galatea 11-15-2004 06:31 PM

I heard it on talk radio a few days back. Said something about her taking over either the defense or maybe it was homeland security.....but its definately one of the two

Scarecrow 11-15-2004 07:55 PM

Condi will be the new Sec. of State, just heard it on MSNBC

Galatea 11-15-2004 07:57 PM

ok now we just have to wait on someone to assasinate bush and cheney to have that heart attack and we have our first african american and/or female president and it won't be Hillary Clinton!

jseal 11-15-2004 08:08 PM

...but we'll still have a Bush in the White House!

Galatea 11-15-2004 08:10 PM

I said it in another thread.....I would think bush in politics would always be a good thing at pixies....

jseal 11-15-2004 08:17 PM

Now that you mention it...how does that old saying go?

"A new bush sweeps clean."

...or something like that.

Galatea 11-15-2004 08:21 PM

um....sorry but I think that may be broom...."A new broom sweeps cleanest"

jseal 11-15-2004 08:24 PM

Galatea,

I meant well...

Galatea 11-15-2004 08:26 PM

I had a principal in high school whose name was Broom....that didn't work out well so maybe that saying isn't all correct. The year after I graduated he got fired for sleeping with one of the Sophomores...

Galatea,

That had better been one hell of a piece of ass!

Galatea 11-15-2004 08:29 PM

Prolly not...he was an ugly fuck....:P

jseal 11-15-2004 08:35 PM

Galatea,

I just read the announcement that Condoleezza Rice will be the nominated for Secretary of State. Whoda thunk it? Not my first choice, but then again, I'm not saddled with that responsibility.

Galatea 11-15-2004 08:42 PM

I think its an awesome idea personally. But I don't like to talk about my preferences of politics. It only leads to conflict because everybody has their own ideas and I don't like to argue. :) Same with religion. I just tend to stay away from talking about preferences. Lets just hope she or whoever takes his position does good by us.

AMEN BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!

wyndhy 11-15-2004 09:02 PM

i wonder...if they had resigned *before* the election, would bush still have won?

Travelinguy 11-16-2004 01:54 AM

I like Rice being the Secretary of State and I would like to see Gen Tommy Franks as Secretary of Defense. I like Rummy fine but I think he might go and Franks would be a visionary in that position.

jseal 11-16-2004 03:12 AM

Travelinguy,

The position of Secretary of Defense is usually filled by a civilian with some military background. The last career officer to fill that position was George Marshal in the Truman administration. Not that General Franks couldn’t do a fine job, but the other services might perceive a (real or imagined) prejudice towards Army.

dicksbro 11-16-2004 03:31 AM

I think that in most administrations, cabinet members tend to stay for only one term in one position. With all the stress, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Actually, I don't think leaving is an unusual thing ... even for really good people like Colin Powell.

I can't imagine how his wife put up with his traveling so much or why any married/family person would want that job.

WildIrish 11-16-2004 09:28 AM

My theory is that he's distancing himself from Bush so he can run in 08.

But I'm just a goofball on the internet...what do I know?

Like Galatea said...I just hope they do us right.

wyndhy 11-16-2004 05:12 PM

WI i heard on NPR that Powell most likely will never run for pres. his wife has expressly forbidden it and he will not go against her wishes.

Sounds like SOMEBODY may have borrowed Liliths whip.....

But yeah...I have heard he's resigned to live a private life with his family. You can't blame him for that.

As for 2008, the race is going to be Hillary Clinton (D) vs. Rudi Gulliani (R).....mark my words....

LixyChick 11-17-2004 06:04 AM

Any news on who will take Condi's place? Or, is GW still on vacation back at the ranch?

These decisions worry the shit outta me! That White House is getting nuttier by the day!

Galatea 11-17-2004 02:48 PM

They said who was going to take her place but I forget who it was....

WildIrish 11-17-2004 03:03 PM

Bush said that Rice's deputy, Steve Hadley, would succeed her as national security adviser.
