Why Does It Make Sense...

I've been catching the news at all hours of the day lately and it never fails...there's Saddam with a noose on his neck!

Why do you suppose that it makes sense to the "powers that be" that a hanging is suitable television at any hour and on any channel, and yet we've darted clear back to the fifties in what we now see/hear (TV and radio) of a sexual content since the unveiling of Janet's [ugly] boob?

In essense...why is killing and death more acceptable than sexiness and the human body?

Just had to ask out loud!

Belial 01-04-2007 05:55 AM

People fed a healthy diet of sex (which is only partially sated by titilation, which is what the seconds of boob was) are happy people, and happy people are hopeful people, and hopeful people feel they have the power to do something about how the government is fucking them. It's Orwellian.

jseal 01-04-2007 06:08 AM

LixyChick,

Violence on television is socially acceptable, sex much less so. Consider children's animated cartoons - Tom & Jerry are the poster children.

An reality of our society.

wyndhy 01-04-2007 08:44 AM

 beats the hell outta me, unless we want to get into another debate about religious influence. ;)

WildIrish 01-04-2007 09:38 AM

I wish the networks were as quick to broadcast infamous boobs as they are in televising this rubbish.

Steph 01-04-2007 01:30 PM

Good point, Lixy!

I purposely avoid videos of the hanging. I don't care about anyone's opinion about the man but to view his death over & over is truly disturbing. I'd hate to have to explain it to a child.

jbh3 01-04-2007 03:11 PM

An opinion....just an opinion
I guess our moral beliefs throughout History has always been rooted in religion....where it is "ok" kill your one neighbors wife for murder(eye for an eye) but a sin to swap partners with your other neighbor.

I don't know, this one perplexes me

Scarecrow 01-04-2007 03:13 PM

I am also getting tired of all the show with the "Life and Times of Saddom ...". As for the pics, no telling about some people's taste, myself I just turn to a different channel

Irezumi Kiss 01-04-2007 03:26 PM

One of the good things about watching erotica and porn is that there's no pictures of Saddam to be seen in the viewin'.

Jest ONE of the good things, mind you.

:corn:

gekkogecko 01-04-2007 03:58 PM

Very good point, IK.

Lilith 01-04-2007 04:29 PM

It disgusts me. I have avoided it as well.

LixyChick 01-04-2007 06:33 PM

Geezzzzzzzzz O man! I love you guys!

*adding "Orwellian" to my vocabulary*

I have to say...I KNOW there is an entire version of the hanging on the net somewhere but I will not ever look at it! I never looked at the beheading vids and I will not view this either.

Here's my warped line of thinking...

I hate bees, wasps, hornets and the like...but I can't kill them and I can't watch as my husband kills them either. I'm not against them being killed if they are too close to home and endanger me or my family, but I don't need to see the deed to know it's done. I HATE seeing a living being in one instant and that life snuffed in the blink of an eye...no matter what lifeform it is!

I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more offended by witnessing killing or dying and seeing the dead afterward than I am about viewing a naked human life/body!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't even watch National Geographic when they show the lions hunting on the Serengetti (sp?)...or whatever may be hunting whatever. I turn away or turn it off. Why the fuck would I want to see a man hanged??????

*SHUDDER*

Scarecrow 01-04-2007 07:21 PM

^^^ she just wants to see men that are hung

Irezumi Kiss 01-04-2007 08:19 PM

^^^ that, or watching them being smothered to death between her thighs when she locks them in place during orgasm! :slurp:

I have pondered this since I read your thread this morning. The only logical conclusion IS that "killing and death more acceptable than sexiness and the human body" to the "powers that be".

I am unaware of any guideline, regulation or law that has hampered ANY conviction held by thses powers. :(

IowaMan 01-04-2007 08:54 PM

I think you hit it on the head there PF.

I've been doing all I can to avoid seeing any more about it as well. I guess I can understand some people's curiosity about wanting to see something like that but I'll pass. I'm perfectly content looking at naked pics of Pixies. ;)

Gentlefolk,

Well here is a bit of good news. The only remaining video of Steve Irwin's encounter with the stingray has been given to his wife, and she said that the video of his death should not be broadcast.

Loulabelle 01-05-2007 04:47 AM

Lixy I've argued this point for years.

How stupid that a breast should be considered not suitable viewing for children, yet the World Health Organisation advises that children are fed from them for the first two years of their lives.

Breasts aren't about sex - they are about nourishment, comfort and....dare I say it out loud...women's power! That's why our male society is equally fascinated and terrified by them.

I agree with you Lixy. I find graphic violence to be very disgusting and turn off the news or turn away during a program that insists on portraying it.

But, you know, we're not unique. I understand that while the Romans flocked to the arenas to watch people fight to the death or simply be killed; the they were horribly offended by Romans being nude (except at the baths) or by having sex in public (although the phallus was considered a symbol of fertility and often used in the home as a decoration). Nude Roman sculptures are usually copies of Greek originals.

I'm beginning ... well, okay, not beginning ... to think people (other than Pixies, of course) are somewhat goofy.

scotzoidman 01-05-2007 11:29 AM

Cartoonist Bill Plympton pointed it out some 30 years ago (in his book "Medium Rare", which I believe is still somewhere in my basement collection): "Violence in movies & TV is OK, but violence in real life will get you arrested...Sex in real life is OK, but sex on movies & TV will get you arrested."

I love boobs because I relish in the feeling of a nipple hardening in my mouth while I'm sucking it. I love the texture of a stiffened areola against my tongue, and I love the soft yet firm feel and the weight of a full breast in my hand.

/me puts on my Freud hat.....

Is that a hankering to return to infancy, I wonder.......not that I'd blame you, of course...is probably the reason I'd quite like to try sucking on a breast myself sometime!

I'd like some milk and nookie .. er .. cookies. :)

osuche 01-07-2007 01:20 AM

Most video games have tons of violence, as do cartoons. Kids are surrounded by the stuff. Adults want more titillating versions - like live executions - because we've become deadened to violence by the time we reach adulthood.

Sad but true

scotzoidman 01-08-2007 04:27 PM

I was gonna post a link to the news story here, but lost the link...in any case, it was a story about a boy (5 or 6 yr old) that hung himself, apparently trying to recreate the Saddam hanging...another victory for responsible journalism...

osuche,

I suspect that you are correct. :(

Loulabelle 01-09-2007 02:50 AM

I've said that for years too, Osuche!

It is one of the reasons that I don't watch violent films. I don't want to reach a point where it no longer shocks me.
