Planting a pineapple?
I bought a pineapple yesterday, and I've always heard about how making a pineapple grow is easy. I want to know if you've ever had success with making a pineapple plant grow! I've looked at a few different websites... Some recommend letting the plant take root in a glass before actually planting it, others let the plant dry for a week before planting it - what have you done that worked? Do you have any advice for me?

I'm headed to go to take pics of mine for you :D

Keep in mind my garden is not weeded and is a wreck.
I just set them in loose dirt. I don't bury them. I just press them in. I cut them off and do it same day. You have to have more than one to fertilze and get a pineapple. I know Summer's husband had one that got a pineapple. |
Cool Lil.....
I had one as a house plant many moons ago..... same technique as Lil... cut off the top 20% and pushed into a plant pot... That's it.... |
Well it sounds easy enough... How long ago did you plant those Lil? Will the plant get as big indoors? Is it a good idea to have one inside a tiny dorm room or will it get too big?
|
I'm not sure it gets deep roots you might be able to plant it in a terra cotta saucer. The two are about 1.5 years old and the single one is older.

Interesting!?!?!?!
I would love to see the links before I start asking stupid questions. :D |
|
What are you trying to do PS? Don't you know pineapples belong down in Florida? Especially those little red ones. They don't even export them up to us.
|
That's pretty cool!!!! Hmmm maybe in March I'll get a pinnapple and try that.

Maybe we should see if there is a 'Chia Pineapple'. That would work for you. :D |
Most pineapples have sharp leaves. If you want an indoor plant, choose a variety with soft smooth leaves.

We had ours in a 12" terra cotta pot but it didn't get as big as Lil's... so it was fine in the apartment

HI Neige
I have a plant for the past 6-8 months. The hardet part is getting it started, then it's quite easy to take care of. I had another several years ago, I kept transplanting it and it kept getting bigger. Finally it was too big and I got rid of it, I think I had it for at least 2 years. If you want to keep it small, just don't put it a pot that's too big. I started them all the same way. Cut the top with a couple inches of fruit, let it dry out 24 hrs, then plant it in humid soil. I tried 3 one died, the other two were great. I had heard to leave the fruit on the bottom and it worked for me, I never tried to root one in H2O. The best thing to do is find a nice pineapple with a healthy looking top. I might try to put it in my garden this summer... Feel free if you have any more questions, I'm a bit of a plant nut... |
*bump!* Cuz I'm finally getting around to doing this! :D
|
Mine (I have 3) barely made it through the winter outdoors.
|
Here they'd be under 2 feet or more of snow!

My mom has a pineapple plant and it took several years before it started producing pineapples. And I don't mean one or two, I mean most of life it didn't produce anything and I'm almost 22. What she did was she cut the top off and pealed off the bottom fronds until she exposed roots, then used a combination of sand and soil, mostly sand, and planted it. it got pretty big. You might want to try doing a bit of research into exactly what pineapple plants like. And as for them belonging in Florida, my mom's was planted and grew in a pot in Connecticut. As well as a six foot orange tree in a pot.

They seem to do pretty good in lava. ;)
|
Well I've tried a couple so far but they rot and die. I'm going to keep trying though! :)
|
Too much water, Neige.
Crank back on the water to encourage root growth. |
I've heard much the same about rooting an avocado seed, that most will just rot, but the one that does take root is worth the effort.
|
I have 3 pineapple plants and 3 avocado plants as well. I was given the avocado ones and told they are dif sexes and that maybe if the wind blows just right and I dance naked under the full moon in the front yard they will make babies.

If nothing else you could make a video out of the dance and make some money that way. |
Guess I'm different I'm growing a orange tree in NJ
|
I'm growing a maple tree
.... in the rain gutter. ;) |
^ Absolutely no challenge at all. The challenge is, stopping them from growing in the gutter...involves getting on a ladder & cleaning them out, or so I hear :rolleyes2
|
PF's resorting to gutter tactics again.
