Should I become a redhead?

I need a change.

I'm not looking for anything horribly drastic.

I'm thinking of dyeing my hair. However, I've never done it, apart from wash out dye for Halloween!!! My friend, the last time she dyed her hair, used dye that washed out after 30 shampoos and I am thinking of trying that, just in case I don't like it.

So I guess I'm just looking for tips. Should I do it myself or get it done professionally? Do you have any hair-dyeing horror stories to scare me away from it? I'm thinking red... what do you think?

maddy 11-12-2007 08:24 PM

i personally prefer professional. Even with the semi-permanents you see the out-growth which drives me batty on my head and then I have to dye again! I just got mine all highlighted which is a bit easier to grow out if you want, but it isn't generally the cheapest way to go.

Aqua 11-12-2007 08:24 PM

I think that you can do whatever you want as long as you post pics afterward. :D

I know a few ladies that dye their hair themselves frequently. Give it a shot.

Yeah, I'm thinking about when it will grow out... That's why I'm thinking more of the semi-permanents over the permanents.

Lilith 11-12-2007 09:06 PM

Go semi if you do it yourself but I suggest professional.

fzzy 11-12-2007 09:18 PM

I'm with Lil -- especially the first time! Sometimes they have to actually strip the color from your hair to get it to take. And 30 washes can take awhile to get to, you don't want to get one of those awful shades (although they are more likely to happen when you change color from a previous coloring job). Hope you like the new do!!!

Rhiannon 11-12-2007 09:28 PM

first time you dye your hair. get it professionally done. it cost more but you will def be more satisfied

Neige 11-12-2007 10:06 PM

My mom used to dye her hair when I was a kid... I've watched her do it 389750137 times. I guess I was hoping that I would be able to do it myself to save money.

Lilith 11-12-2007 10:07 PM

It's not about your ability. It's about the quality available to us non-professionals.

Neige 11-12-2007 10:09 PM

Hmm... maybe I should indulge in a new haircut at the same time... :yikes:

Geeeeeez PF... I did say nothing drastic!!!!!!!!!

osuche 11-12-2007 11:01 PM

I recommend Clairol Natural Exotics...they have a shade of red that's semi-permanent that I like (I actually think they have 3). It lasts about 3 months for me. As long as you're not trying to cover greys, it washes out nicely and blends into your normal hair color, leaving the color just a little darker than you started with.

It never 100% leaves your hair, but as it washes out it blends. I do it myself once or twice a year and I really like the results. It's not hard to do. Really.

I actually leave it in my hair an extra 5 minutes to get a little extra color. It also helps to have a heavy duty conditioner around for a few days - my hair gets awfully dry right after applications.

Neige 11-12-2007 11:17 PM

Thanks osuche!!! I'll definitely consider that!

Fire and snow?

Sounds interesting.

Pita 11-13-2007 07:24 AM

I had mine done once by a professional and was very pleased with the results, however the cost was insane, or at least it was where I went. I have dyed my own hair for years and there are some good products on the market now.

My best advice is that you find a Sally's Beauty Supply and let them help you pick out a shade and necessary supplies. It is really very easy to dye your hair. The biggest trick is to have enough dye to cover the amount of hair you have. When I had long hair I would use two bottles for even coverage.

I also dye my teenagers hair with those semi-permanent colors and once they wash out she is back to normal. Well, she will never be normal, but her hair is fine. ;)

Rhiannon 11-13-2007 05:31 PM

good idea tingling tess. sallys would help you alot..
Then you can look at all the different shades of red out there. believe me there are many..

take pics when you are done.. :)

Neige 11-13-2007 05:51 PM

Hmm I've never seen a Sally's Beauty Supply. Maybe they are only in the States?

I went to the drugstore today and found a shade I liked of the brand osuche recommended. I'm going to shop around a bit and make sure I find it at the best price! :D

jay-t 11-13-2007 06:25 PM

You are getting GREEN contacts also .right ! just something about a greeneyed red head :hot: :hot:

Neige 11-13-2007 06:26 PM

Hmmm... I do need to get new contacts as I am on my last pair!!! I do still want people to recognize me, though ;)

I've done it!!! I used the Clairol Natural Instincts #20RB, Caribbean Mahogany. My hair isn't dry yet, but I like it so far :D

Salacious 11-17-2007 07:27 PM

I remember when I went red. There were people that actually didn't recognize me! It's kind of fun to be incognito.

I'm sure you will be looking dynamite and feeling diva-divine very soon!

Will there be pix?

I recently un-reded my head after about 8 years as a redhead. Now it's something called iced mocha... a light brown with golden highlights... I like the L'Oreal Feria Multifaceted Shimmering Colors... they give great shine.

Doing something new is always fun!

Neige 11-17-2007 08:59 PM

There will be pics, but I need to find the cable to download the pics from my camera first. :D

It's not very red - it looks brown but in the light it looks redder. I can't wait for tomorrow to see it in the daylight!!! :D

Salacious 11-17-2007 09:52 PM

New color always looks better in the light of day, especially sunshine! I bet it looks wonderful.

IowaMan 11-20-2007 03:36 AM

Yep, I'm in 100% agreement with Sal. I'm sure you look absolutely wonderful Neige.

Wicked Wanda 11-22-2007 10:34 PM

I am a natural redheaded bitch, but I love to play with the shades and subtle tints, so I have had my hair done many times.
I think I have been about 40 different kinds if redhead in my lifetime.
I agree with the "go pro" advice, you will be happier with the results, especially with reds. Some tints look very odd and brassy.

Winston77 11-24-2007 11:04 PM

Have you found that cable yet?

Neige 11-24-2007 11:16 PM

Not yet!!! But GC said he would lend me his! He's just slow getting it here is all... ;)

Salacious 11-25-2007 07:51 AM

So in the light of day do you love it? Or are you still deliberating?
