Valentines Day = Buying a gift for a woman?
 

FIRST - Before any of our ladies here kick my ass over the thread title here me out. My wife and I do sweet things for each other on V-day, and it doesn't always mean spending money.

The thread title refers to all the commercials I hear on my radio about what to BUY HER this Valentines day. I hear none talking about gift ideas for your GUY. One commercial goes through an equation for guys to figure out what to buy... How long have you dated by how deep are your feelings, etc = how much to spend. This is followed by the female perspective... How lame was the gift over how cheap was the restaurant = how fast you dump him. I also know some girls that love to talk about the gift potential for the 14th, but only for what they are getting or where they are being taken too. I know some girls that are not like that at all, that are trying to figure out what they can do for their guy on V-day.

SO... how many people here think that advertisers should play up to both sexes for V-day? Has anyone heard commercials aimed at women buying for their men?

How many people think that V-day is all about the woman and guys should cater to their girl's every whim and hope they'll 'get lucky'?

i've seen a bunch of ads for both men and women to buy for their bf/gf online, however you are right in saying the radio/tv really has the hype mainly over what to buy the girl...I personally just love a nice massage and sex or something on valentines day (or any other day lol), it really isn't all about money..not to say I don't enjoy to receive things here and there.....but the day of love has really turned into another commercialized big what to do, just like christmas has....

Valentines Day is supposed to be the most popular day to get engaged.

Yeah....my brother proposed to his wife on V-Day. As far as the advertising being geared towards men buying for women, I know every V-Day I've actually been lucky enough to have a g/f, I've gotten her something that she doesn't expect..something small she's mentioned that means alot...as far as what she got me?...I got laid..nuff said..LOL

Valentines day is ABSOLUTELY not SUPPOSED to be geared only towards buying a gift for a lady love... In my life, everytime I have had someone special in my life on the event.. I always try to make a unexpected attempt at surprising him in a way he would never expect...

now that I am alone.. I have a whole list of ideas....

Most of the commercials here focus on him buying for her, usually very expensive things like dozens of long-stemmed roses or jewellery.

I personally don't care much for Valentine's day, it's sooo commercialized. Hubby and I might go out for dinner, but we might just stay home and watch a video or something. We don't buy gifts for each other on V-day, we try to focus on making every day special and romantic :)

I think that commercially, valentines is definatly geared more towards women. I mean, what construction working guy wants roses delivered on valentines day? But, not holding to tradition, I deliver my man both flowers and balloons almost every year on valentines day, at work, in front of his co-workers.

Last year, I teased him that I had ordered him a singing telegram, and when the really old guy delivered his balloons, the guy looked at him all serious, and said, "And now, I have to sing to you."

Nick about died, before the guy started laughing, and told him he was only kidding him. It was all in good fun. He also got a teddy bear dressed up as a wizard.

Stores in general advertise the stuff they get for the day: heart shaped boxes of candy, singing dancing stuffed animals, sexy night gowns, candles, and flowers. Overall, those gifts appeal more to the female group.

It'd be nice to see more valentine gifts geared towards men, but honestly, while it's cute sending your male lover interest a teddy bear, what's he most likely to do with it after the day is done?

I almost always buy my guy a gift, and try to spend the day with him BUT...

...I also like to feel special on Valentines Day. I do all the housework, cooking, pay the bills, etc. Valentines day should be a day where I get rewarded...not with big gifts...but with attention and thoughtfulness.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here... Isn't Valentines Day supposed to be about the love you share with another, not being rewarded for doing work?

I think the thing is that women set more store by romance than most men do, therefore, they are encouraged to make a romantic gesture at Valentine's day.

For me personally, I really care about making valentine's day special. I think having spent pretty much all of my teenage years without receiving a Valentine, if I'm attached at this time of year, I really want to make a big deal of it. That means me cooking a meal or suggesting somewhere to go for dinner, sending cards (homemade is always good) and buying a little romantic gift for my man. Last year Fussy had black silk boxers from me, for example.

Yep, you're right. I believe you caught me in one of my (hopefully rare) bitchy moments. Sorry.
