Being just old enough to be aware of it when it happened, "The Godfather" really was the ultimate gangster movie. It wasn't the first, by any means, but everything before was a different animal; most of the earlier gangster flics had to adhere to the Hayes code, meaning they couldn't be seen as openly glorifying criminal behavior, ergo, the bad guys always paid for their sins, & Good always prevailed in the end. (For an early gangster flic that pushed right up to the edge of that envelope, see "White Heat" w/James Cagney(1949)...1st movie to my knowledge that explored the nature of the psychopathic killer, & Cagney's final scene atop a refinery tank is a true classic..."Top of the world, Ma!") Anyway, my point is, I saw the Godfather infect all aspects of pop culture, give us a new name to call mob bosses, & for me, every Mob flic since has been living in the shadow of that classic.
