gay marriages

should gay have the right to get wed
some of my gay freinds want to
i think all lovers should be aloud the
right to chose
ok i'll get down off my soap box now:)

darkmanx 05-01-2002 11:26 AM

i think that, for the most part, society has come along enough to accept the gay/lesbian comunity as part of life...so i dont see why letting them marry is such an issue

vampeyes 05-01-2002 12:21 PM

Axe - As you should know may gay and lesbian couples have commitment cerrimonies already with the help of the Reverrend of thier local gay church or some choose just to speak thier vows in a ceremony in front of friends and family. That is what marraige is all about..the commiting of oneself to another in front of friends family and whatever deity you choose or choose not to worship. My brother married his partner and my daughter was the flower girl it was one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended.

Yes... even though there are committment ceremonies, it should be legal. That way, they can get all of the rights that straight couples have. Like insurance benefits for one.

Just my 2 cents

The real question is way shouldn't they have all the right of any other couple.

Hopefully we live in a society that can tolerate diversity, so I see no reason why same sex couples shouldn't enjoy the same legal freedoms are everyone else.

I think people should do whatever makes them happy, so long as it doesn't interfer in every humans birth given right of life, liberty and the persuit of happiness

Two of my closest friends are Japanese and lesbians.

Im happy to say in my little city they have a domestic partners law which is really close to having a legal marriage.

Grumble 05-06-2002 04:52 AM

I think that they are entitled to marry someone of their choosing.

It should not be for others to dictate their choice

Oldfart 05-06-2002 05:44 AM

I find it amazing how a little word can generate such feeling.

'Marriage' has so many religious and legal ramifications, some of which vary from

jurisdiction to jurisdiction, that we have to define what we're talking about.

The warm and fuzzy feeling that gay (and lesbian) couples should be allowed to

commit to a long term loving partnership is only the tip of the iceberg.

Property rights, division of any children conceived (IVF or other) in the marriage,

financial child support, gay divorce and many I haven't tripped over in my reading

make this a headache of monumental proportions.

Comments?

At the school I was at, we became known as one of the very few church based preschool's in the bible belt, who were respectful of all types of families. Because of that we had an inordinate amount of families with 2 mothers, including a family in which the mothers were both pastors. I had a chance to talk to these women and find out how they handled many of the things OF mentioned. It almost seemed that the lack of legal formalization made them have more flexibility in the arrangements they came up with when dealing with the termination of a relationship. I think sometimes it is the very equality that we (all people)seek that often times bites us in the ass. Once we are equal then well we are......... equal. Sometimes it limits your options. Free love.... free choice....free to be.....

sadora 05-06-2002 06:25 PM

I feel that all of the points OF brought up have nothing to do with whether the couple is "gay" or not. Those same issues come to play with "straight" couples now. I would think you would handle these situations just as you would with any couple going through a divorce. With the children... legal adoption is a good solution to rights to the child that may not biologially be yours, but is in every other aspect.
Just my 2 cents
