protecting the mattress
OK, some practical knowledge.
I have done the shower curtain in a pinch. (A hot oil massage. Oohyesssssss!)
For a more *ahem* regular situation involving lots of oils, body fluids or other liquids, a multiple- layered barrier is the best way. A really thick, fluid resistant, washable mattress pad over a plastic hotel-type mattress protector is proof against anything known to womankind. The thick pad muffles the plastic crinkle really well. If you get a good quality plastic cover you won't hear much noise anyway.
My personal method?
The mattress pad augmented with some giant egyptian cotton bath towls.
For *I'm blushing again* special occassions, I have a king -size plastic mattress protector that I put on the bed ahead of time. I also remove the good sheets, and replace them with some 300 count cotton sheet. Still feels reaonably nice on bare skin, but not a financial tragedy if I have to replace them
Messily yours,
WW
