I honestly can't tell you. I seldom pay any attention to the rating and today's PG is last years X movie. 
You are old enough to remember the movie theaters of old with the 20' high screen, seating for at least 500, flicker and jump when the other projector started changeover at the end of a reel and the occasional broken film that seemed to take forever to get re-threaded.
