Penis length has been measured in the medical studies 3 ways. First, stretched. Second, erect. Third, functional erect, where they push the ruler to the public bone (os pubis) so that variations based on fat pad depth are negated.

The only study to use all 3 methods was the 1996 California study by Wessells, which concluded that stretched length was virtually equal to erect length.

Here are the averages for the surveys.

1. Stretched

Schoenfeld & Beebe (1942 US)
186 patients aged 17-25
Avg length 5.17"

Bondil, et al (1992 Australia)
905 paitents aged 17-91
6.59" (THE ONLY 3RD PARTY MEASURED STUDY OVER 6" - AND ITS
METHODOLOGY
HAS BEEN QUESTIONED)

Wessells, et al (1996 US)
80 patients aged 21-82
4.90"

Sutherland, et al (1996 US)
21 patients
5.00"

Ponchietti, et al (2001 Italy)
3,300 Italians aged 17-19
4.92"

Notes:

1. The Schoenfeld & Beebe study showed that 80% of the study group
fell between 10.8 cm (4.25 in) and 15.5 cm (6.10 in) stretched, with
the shortest stretch at 8.5 cm (3.35 in) and the longest stretch at
19.5 cm (7.68 in).

2. The Wessels, et al study showed that the mean stretched length for
the subjects 40 years and younger was 13.308 cm (5.24 in), while the
patients over 40 had a mean stretched length of 12.278 cm (4.83 in).
The shortest stretch was 7.5 cm (2.95 in), while the longest stretch
was 19.0 cm (7.48 in).

3. The Sutherland, et al study group consisted of men who experienced
precocious puberty or suffered congenital adrenal hyperplasic, and is
not a representative sample of the population at large but is
included for comparison purposes.

4. The Ponchietti, et al study showed that 90% of the study group
fell between 8.0 cm (3.15 in) and 16.5 cm (6.50 in) stretched, while
the 2.5th percentile was 7.0 cm (2.76 in) and the 97.5th percentile
was 17.0 cm (6.70 in).

2. Erect

Chung, et al (1971 Korea)
702 patients aged 23-31
5.0"

Wessells, et al
80 patients aged 21-82
5.07"

Ng & Tang (1997 Maylasia)
74 patients aged 22-70
4.77"

Park, et al (1998 Korea)
309 patients 20-70
4.68"

Unidus (1999 Korea)
279 patients aged 20-38
4.98"

Lifestyles (2001 US)
300 patients aged 18-23)
5.88" (SPRING BREAK STUDY WHICH TOOK VOLUNTEERS AT A BAR)

Notes:

The Wessels, et al study showed that the shortest erection was 7.5 cm (2.95 in), while the longest erection was 19.0 cm (7.48 in).

The Unidus condom study showed a range of 9.7 cm (3.82 in) to 17.6 cm 6.93 in).

3. Functional Length (Penis length plus fat pad depth)

da Ros, et al (1994 Brazil)
150 patients of unkown age
5.71"

Wessells, et al (1996 US)
80 patients aged 21-82)
6.20"

Schneider, et al (2001 Germany)
111 patients aged 18-19
5.70"

Schneider, et al (2001 Germany)
32 patients aged 40-68
5.58"

Notes:

The da Ros, et al study showed 76% of men had a functional length between 12.0 cm (4.72 in) and 16.0 cm (6.30 in). The shortest functional length was 9.0 cm (3.54 in) and the longest was 19.0 cm (7.48 in).

The Wessels, et al study showed that the shortest functional length was 9.0 cm (3.54 in), while the longest functional length was 21.0 cm (8.27 in).

These are the only true medical studies where the PATIENT DID NOT DO THE MEASURING AND/OR REPORTING.

---------------------------------------

The Wessels, et al study is the only study that I know of that is valid for the western world.

And as we can see in this thread you can't trust a lot of men when reporting their dick size, mine by the way is a standard 5 1/2"
