Steph,
Garry Kasparov lost the last game when he made a mistake. Make no mistake – GM Kasparov is one hell of a chess player. I can't begin to tell you how good Grandmasters are! It is like trying to arm wrestle an oil derrick! The trouble is that he has only a couple of games left. The good news for the human side is that he is playing white next, and that gives him a slight edge.
Keep in mind that the program he is playing against has been around since about 1991 or so, and Frans Morsch (the author) is a gifted developer and works with a development team in Germany to constantly improve this program.
Today's top programs like Fritz run at 5,000,000 and more positions per second. They have a playing strength of well over 2700 and are a match for even the top 100 players in the world. In rapid chess only the top dozen or so can compete, in blitz chess probably only two or three players could survive.
If anyone can beat the machine, GM Kasporov can.
