I am minded of General John Shalikashvili. In 1993, he succeeded General Powell as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a post he held until his retirement in 1997.

When President Clinton appointed him, there was some particularly mean-spirited comments made – not about him, but his father – who had made anti-Semitic comments. In Poland. Before WWII.
