I think there absolutley is, particularly in American society (as that is the only one about which I can speak with any real experience) a notion that sex is wrong. Call it a throwback to our puritan founders, or the fault of the religious right, or what have you, but it's pretty pervasive.

I used to work at a movie theater, many moons ago, and I was overwhelmed by the numbers of parents of pre-teens who would inquire as to why a film was rated PG-13 or R. If the film was violent, it was allowable. If it had a sexual theme, it was passed over.

Isn't that amazing? I mean, witnessing the act of harming or taking another's life is BETTER, in our perception, than witnessing the act of the creation of life. Even though, of course, sex (especially that which is depicted in film) serves a more hedonistic tendancy, and is not always about conception, isn't there something fundamentally better about an act of love, or even just pleasure, than an act of hate or violence?

It's the same reason that the word "shit" is more socially accepted than the work "fuck". It's not the worst thing ever if the slang word for defecation slips out... but the slang word for sex? Shame on you!

Okay, off my soapbox, now. Poor ol' soapbox.
