Cool Electronic music appreciation thread

If you have one, what is your favourite genre of electronic music? What artists are your favourites? Favourite tracks? How did you get into it?

Don't expect an avalanche of responses, but all on topic are welcome

Fave genre is breaks. I can't remember how I got into it but I have a lot of friends in the electronic music scene here in T.O.

Robb G (no relation to Ali G) is a pal o' mine: robbg.com

He's actually been pretty successful with it here.

I also like trance and jungle but have to be in a more mellow mood to listen to it.

I'm just a fan of local rave DJ's... not into the complete rave scene, I just love techno. And there's a club at home that I frequent, but I'm not a true fan of any national artists.

I've always like Techno, and the more electronic version of Hip Hop, as opposed to the P Diddy type - I've GOTTA be able to pump iron to it!

In no particular order;

90's:
The Prodigy;
The Chemical Brothers (NOT their Trance stuff, however!)
Fatboy Slim - the man is a genius;
The Wiseguys.
NWA/Ice Cube

Old Skool:

Public Enemy;
Mantronix;

jaybee: Have you heard any electrofunk? If not, you might enjoy it.

Myself, I like trance, hard trance and NRG a bit, jungle and drum'n'bass when I'm in a bit of a mellow mood as Steph says, love happy hardcore long as there's not *too* much piano and chipmunk vocals and I'm in a bouncy mood, maybe some gabber if I'm a bit antisocial (and all metalled out), drill'n'bass if I want a mental workout (anyone know any good drill'n'bass artists besides Aphex Twin and Squarepusher?), but my favourite is Goa/psy-trance. Love those sci-fi-horror movie samples and sweeping squelchy storming synth leads Also trying to get a hold of some oldskool breaks-based hardcore and acid house, for historical perspective

But I'm still a metalhead!

By 'Electrofunk', do you mean a la Kraftwerk? If so, it's what I was raised on in the 80's. The 'movement', if you will, began with 'Buffalo Gals' in '82, and exploded outwards from the engulf the world.

I've got a few MP3's from the heyday of Electro in 85-87 (i.m.o), but I wish there were a Top 20 from those days, I just can't remember the names anymore. It's too long ago.

Sounds to me like you should get into PC-based mixing, if you aren't already. Fruity Loops is allegedly a great program capable of dissecting the breaks and beats of an MP3 on a layer basis (I always wondered how they sample a single beat from a song without taking ALL the output over its duration), and if you aren't happy with a particular song....change it.

Sounds like a fantasy come true, eh?

Jaybee.

I've done a bit with Fruity Loops, got a bit of a psy track I've been working on and haven't touched for a while. I tell you, all those soft synths and effects are murder on CPU time...

I think remixing either requires access to the master, sampling a solo part like a drum break, or isolating stereo channels.

I'm not an electrofunk afoniciado (just heard about it) and I think what you described is what that is. Apparently there's some sort of recent revival of it.

My favorite kinds are trance and goth-synth/ebm. Don't rightly knwo how I got into it in general, got into the goth-electronica stuff from late nights/early mornings listening to winamp radiostations, (it also has free streaming porn lol).
