I'm Nuts!
It's 5:30am here and Mr. Lixy just came up from the cellar with an old basket of mine in his hand. "Honey, come here", he said. I was scared to find out what he was going to show me.
Ya see...this past weekend has been a whirlwind of wildlife for me. Saturday past I found the tiniest bunny in a flower bed close to my house. Thought it was gonna go in the street so I picked it up with gloved hands and deposited it further back in my yard...where baby bunnies belong. It didn't struggle much so I assumed it was sick and would probably die. It did! I found it next morning on the rocks of the same flower bed. Oh well, survival of the fittest I guess.
That discovery was early Sunday morning. Later that day, as we worked in the yard, I heard something hit something over by my truck. Turned around to see the antenna on my truck bobbing. Mr. Lixy asked me what happened and I assumed a bird hit it. He went to look and sure enough there was a Baltimore Oriole in the grass. What a beautiful bird! It was stunned but didn't seem badly hurt. It flew away about 20 minutes later. Whew!
I continued working in the yard and a flash caught my eye. ANOTHER baby bunny? Yep...coming straight at me and headed towards the street. SHIT! OK...I chased the sucker down. This one was fiestier...much fiestier! Took me nearly ten minutes to nab it. "Take a picture", I said to the mister. He took it as the baby screeched in my hands. Damn those things are loud when they aren't sick! I released it way back in the yard this time. Ut oh...something was wrong with the camera and the pic didn't take. Well, I had enough exercise by then and the bunny continued to roam free!
Oh geezzzzz...I'm babbling, and it's about 6am now, and you're probably wondering what was in the basket this morning, huh? Mr. Lixy captured a baby mouse about the size of a half dollar (1"x1" approx.). It was soooooooooooooooo friggin cute and I asked what he was going to do with it. "Put it outside" he said. WHAT??????? "Oh honey, he's so tiny he'll just die or get eaten. I wish you hadn't showed him to me. I won't be able to think of anything else all day now. OK...go...go do what you have to...but don't tell me what you do!" Damn...he knows how sensitive I am about that sort of thing! Out he goes...and comes back in not 1 minute later with the basket in hand and a smile on his face. "He's still in the basket, isn't he?"
Now ya know...if there is one baby mouse, there are many baby mice. But Mr. Lixy loves me and he put it back down in the cellar with a commanding promise that he's buying mouse traps on his way home from work!
Now who's nuts?
