Caught part of "Bowling For Columbine" on cable last night...at least I was watching till the meds kicked in & I dozed off...having seen some of his other films like "Roger & Me", I can say I don't agree with all he has to say, he goes to extremes & I'm a moderate in all things, but...I think it's important that we see things from the other POV every now & again...after all, Bush gets his forum to speak his side every day on Fox News...

I’m not certain that anyone posted here to “win”. I suspect that by leaving this thread with more knowledge (by freely discussing a topical subject) than we came in with, we are all winners, at least to some degree.

I think all the posts have been sufficiently restrained that honest differences of opinion have been exchanged without rancor. Granted, some are more earthy than others, but that is only to be expected, and is good.

Too true – it is easier to remain polite when within punching distance, and posters never are.

That is one of the limits of this medium; a thread terminates when someone becomes sufficiently nasty that the other thread members stop posting, or a mod has to terminate it. It tends to reward misbehavior.

Still, nothing is perfect, and I can’t think of another context where I can get the range of opinions I get here.

Irish, I agree with you wholeheartedly on the foxhole image. What I have trouble with is the deception that I'm seeing from the current administration. I believe that I can best serve my country by supporting the kids currently dodging bullets, while speaking out against the war. I'll go to my grave before I'll ascribe to the "Well, we're there now, let's finish it." mentality that the administration appears to use to justify their actions and divert attention from the original justifications for this action. I have more respect for someone who lies about sleeping around than I do for someone who lies about reasons to invade a sovereign nation..... but at the end of the day, I've seen President Bush caught in lies and I want him out before he has more opportunities to plunge us into more messes. What is the old adage... Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Looks like the article is about some contact for support that Iraq qas looking for against an enemy about 10 years ago. They supposedly approached bin Laden looking for it. The relationship between bin Laden and Hussein over the past decade has been strained to put it mildly. The two simply don't play well together, had different agendas and were pretty much enemies. bin Laden actually made some statements appealing to Muslims to overthrow Iraq, claiming that it was an enemy to the people. Some of these statements were made only a month or two before the U.S. invaded. They certainly are not allies.

An aside note, Bush's family has a history of strong ties to the bin Laden family right up until the 911 attack. Certainly this does not mean that Bush played a role in supporting it.

I never said that there was no reason to invade Iraq, but one could justify invasion and war with a dozen countries around the world if the focus was on shady dealings or even atrocities committed. I love the U.S., but our nation has many blights on it and one only look at a daily newspaper to give an extremeist some wacked excuse for declaring war on us. My contention was and is that Bush threw out untruths as a justification to gain support. Now that pieces of the truth (or at least pnowledge of some untruths) are coming out... it is time to vote with your conscience, whatever that may be.
