Heck you're not daft, I am for doing it....SFC wow I would have loved to have seen that bus of children greeting the magpies. Murphy - I didn't know the bit about Merlyn and magpies...my folks were more Queen Mab than Merlin, I'll have to ask them!
I know the rhyme that goes from 1 to 7
1 is for sorrow, 2 is for joy
3's for a girl, 4's fora boy
5's for a silver, 6 is for gold
7's for a secret never to be told
and the old folkstuff goes that wherever there's a bad spell like only seeing 1 magpie there is usually a get out clause - doffing the forelock. That means you either touch the brim of the cloth cap you're wearing, or if you're not wearing one, you tug on your forelock (a lock of hair at your forehead). That get's rid of the sorrow.
Heck my folks told me this when I was wee and it's kinda stuck for the past 20 odd years. Guess I'm just daft that way, but I don't like seeing only 1 magpie
