U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia lost
For those who haven't heard, the U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia was destroyed this morning on its return trip to earth. Travelling at more than 12,000mph, at an altitude of over 200,000 feet, a catastrophic event took place.
Seven brave men and women were aboard: Cmdr. Rick D. Husband, pilot William C. McCool, payload commander Michael P. Anderson, mission specialists David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Ilan Ramon and Laurel Clark.
My prayers go out to their families. RIP brave souls.

TY rabbit! I just came here to post a notice of the loss.
It's still not known what the cause of the loss was. The shuttle was unable to make it's re-entry. It disintegrated as it entered our atmosphere. The pair of sonic booms expected were never heard.
It's a feeling of deja vu! Another seven astronauts lives lost. A very sad day. Flags are lowered to half mast. Recovery teams are searching for particles of the lost craft. Warnings that the debris can be hazardous are being sent to the masses. Smoldering debris is all over east Texas. Several hundred miles of Texas are reporting various debris. Citizens are keeping at bay from the debris and "guarding" the area till it can be retrieved.

Our brave explorers are lost. What better legacy to them but to keep their memory alive, and renew our support of NASA and their mission. They are our conduit to exploring the unknown frontiers, and we should all thank them for their sacrifice. My thoughts go to their families, and they have the thanks and prayers of the nation and the human family.

You have that right, Lixy. They are finding debris scattered over hundreds of miles. The explosion was heard and felt supposedly as far east as Shreveport, finding peoples just West of Shreveport and down SouthWest of it by at least 200 miles. Huge area to search and alot of lakes.
A terrible loss of life though.
Thoughts and prayers going out to the family members.

I'm right in that flight path, at the end of the debris area, but none has been reported coming down here. It is a terrible day for our space program, the brave volunteers who expand our horizons, and their families. May they rest in Peace, my thoughts and prayers are with them.
It's a very dangerous profession, but we must never stop reaching for the stars.
