Not sure what was, but from the ones I've seen, the 70's WASN'T it.

80's. The musical spectrum exploded in all directions, and with technological advancement like no other decade, IMO. Some examples (albums):
Prince - Purple Rain
Public Enemy - Fear Of A Black Planet
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Giorgio Moroder/Phil Oakey - Electric Dreams Soundtrack
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Michael Jackson - Bad
Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Frank Zappa - Broadway The Hard Way
Frank Zappa - Meets The Mothers Of Prevention
..there's loads more...

Funny Belial, it was an old thread of Skipperooni's about music in the 80's that made me start thinking about all this.

60's. The seeds of the 70's, 80's and beyond lie here.

I would also have to say the 60s.....The Beatles, Motown!, Surf and Drag music, the entire "British Invasion", such a broad variety of styles all on the charts at the same time.......I could go on and on.

In August of 1955 Elvis Aaron Presley signed a new manager (Colonel Tom Parker) and by November of that same year is signed with RCA records. On January 27th 1956, Heartbreak Hotel is released (to go on to become Elvis's first gold record) and R&R is changed forever!
I'll say the 50's changed the face of R&R.......in no small part.....due to Elvis and his pelvis!
