Apartment/Roommate situation
Soon after I found the perfect 2 bedroom apartment, my old roommate from undergrad told me she not returning to New Orleans for graduate school. I have enough to pay for the full months rent + deposit but I'm not sure if I can really afford the 2nd, 3rd, etc. If I get the apartment I'd try to find another roommate. Is it worth the risk of signing the lease before anyone else snags this apartment and then find a roommate? Could she be added to the lease after I signed it? Any advice or additional things I should consider about the situation would greatly be appreciated. Thanks! (oh p.s. the move-in date would be 8/1).

In my experience you can add on roomates to the lease at a later date then the signing. Good Luck!!!

So that basically gives you 2 months to find a roomie. I'd go for it.

Thanks Mackenzie and Lilith. Its not so much of a worry about actually finding a roommate(well maybe slightly worried about that) as it is a worry of trusting a stranger to pay rent, etc. Glad to hear that I could add someone to the lease later on. I'm going to see the apartment again tonight with my parents so we'll see. If anyone else has had similiar experiences, I'd still appreciate any suggestions!

One of my first roommates was the only one on the lease. Could you just set it up so you're the only one on the lease?

I did that and had a seperate WRITTEN agreement with my roommate!!! She ended up being a deadbeat and a check bouncer so, I could kick her out when I felt like it because she wasn't on my lease, but she still had to pay me because I had it in writing and she signed it!!
A little piece of advice from experience....find a 1 BR and live alone.......that way you only have yourself to worry about!!!

as a land lord--I love having two people on a lease; if for no other reason if I have too (and I have), I can go after more then one person for damages, back rent and utilities. I hate to sound like some heartless Troll but, sad to say their are alot of people out there you can count on. But the best advice is to just ask your land lord if this is an option. You could request being primary leasee so if you get an undesirable room mate you can axe them--if you can try and save two months rent along the way so that if you have to get rid of them, you have a safety net. Now if you live in New Orleans (sigh!) I'd like to put an application in for your room mate-HA!

Mackenzie ~ I wish!! But trying to use as little loan money as possible. Thanks for all of your advice!
Vullkan ~ Yep, I definitely feel less pessimistic about it after reading all the responses. Great advice! I'm going to talk to the landlord tomorrow. So this means I am currently accepting applications...I'll need a deposit, references, and of course pictures of you nude. The deposit and references are optional

Ms Cassiopeia
It is I who am so honored--yet I don't think you would like all my tools cluddering up the place. And I think your neighbors, not to mention yourself, would be upset me staying up all night at my labors making things.
Yet I wager a pretty young lady such as yourself could do a lot better then a Troll.
But I would be courious to know how things turn out for you and keep us informed

Cass hon, Mackenzies advice about being the only one on the lease is a good idea. And her advice about getting a written agreement with said roomie is an awesome idea. However, since you are accepting applications....WHERE DO I SEND MINE????

It's good you've found a workable solution to your quandry. You had all us guys trying to find a reason to move to Cajun country.
