Ok I have a serious issue and I could really use a fresh look at it. About 2 months ago I get an email from a lady (29) who lives in Latvia. She got my email from one of those personals websites that I foolishly slapped my info on out of boredom. Anyway we started talking and got to know each other. Out of the blue she emails and says that she loves me and is trying to find out how much it will cost for her to travel here. I've told here that I don't know her well enough to have feelings that strong but it seems to be falling on deaf ears.

I do enjoy our friendship but this is starting to weird me out. I already did my own checking and am pretty sure that she won't have the money necessary to fly here. However I can't be certain. What the hell have I gotten myself into.

Be careful. The idea of a mail order type bride is alive and well except that often now days it is women in the former Soviet countries trying to find a way out. If you are interested keep it up if not, stop all correspondence. You are a "nice guy" and should not let yourself get talked into something that is not really what you want.

The thought that this is all a ploy to get out of there has crossed my mind, but then so has the thought that she is on the level. I just have no way to really be sure.

If it's real, she won't rush. She'll eventually hear you when you say you're not "there yet" or not comfortable, and she'll slow down. If she does care for you as much as she claims...the LAST thing she'd want to do is scare you away by moving too fast. Because it all changed suddenly, I'd say that if she keeps pushing despite you giving her no reason to think you feel the same....well, then I'd start to wonder if she may have reasons beyond love to want to come over. If it does develop in a positive way over time, well....because I'm a cautious so and so, I'd recommend you going over to visit her before having her come into the states to visit you.

And I agree with Lil, the minute she asks for money...cut it off. Hell, in my humble opinion the minute anyone you "just met" online asks for money...it's time to cut them off.

You know, if it were me, and I was starting to doubt the veracity of her feelings....I'd be sorely tempted to do an about face. I'd tell her that my business (job/trustfund/income of whatever sort) just went tits-up and I was now scrounging for pennies....that I wasn't sure how I was going to pay for the dedicated nursing that was sure to become necessary in the next couple of years...and that I was afraid I was going to wind up a burden on my many many children. Not a stunt I'd pull if I thought she was being honest, mind you. But it's sorely tempting if it turns out to be a scam.

Hope it turns out for the best, whatever that turns out to be.

All I can say is quit while your ahead. Alot of the women seeking to move to the States are not just corresponding with one guy....

They will take the first sucker that seemingly fits into their plans!

Working for a site like you mention, we see this all the time. They're usually trying to find a way to move to the States. If you don't feel the same (or feel rushed) then it should be easy to say seeya. If you still want to chat with her, that's cool, just don't extend an invite to visit.

i'm gonna interpret that to mean it's kinda creepy cause that's my take on it. if so...go with your instincts on this! you feel weird because something isn't jiving and even if you can't put your finger on it, something in you is alarmed by it and that something is sending you a message. i am a big believer in the power of instinct, fight or flight kinda stuff, and i think you oughta go with your gut feelings.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I'm usually pretty good about listening to my insticts, but this time I was afraid they might have been influenced. I'm accustomed to meeting people face to face or living close enough to meet some place but this is new for me so I figured some new perspectives were needed. Again thanks, I've got some thinking to do.

Allow me to stir this pot just a bit more Nice Guy! Ya know I speak off the top of my head and I pride myself with a strong instinct when it comes to feelings. As soon as I read your post I got the weirdest "feeling" ever from a seemingly minor situation. I'll go so far as to say that you don't even know that this woman is even that...a woman! People do all kinds of things over the web to get money, or to get here, or both . Yes, there are many out there who would "use" you to get here...but can you be so sure it's even a woman?

I hate that I got that feeling...and I'd hate to see you get taken...so heed the advice here and listen to those who care about you...DON'T LET "HER" COME HERE! This country is full of women hun...and if someone from another country wants to come here of her own volition and meet you...so be it. But, please oh please don't get yourself into this...all I can think of to say is, trap...don't get trapped into this!

Think of it this way...even if this is on the up-and-up...if "she" can get here on her own and seeks you out, you'll be able to check her out on YOUR terms. If you break down and send "her" money to get here...how do you know "she'll" ever come to meet up with you? "She" could have family here who told "her" to get in good with an American so you can join them in America. Hey! Stranger things have happened...but so has stuff like this! Please don't be a statistic!
