Hollywood filmmaker Tony Scott, director of big-screen action hits such as Top Gun and Crimson Tide, has committed suicide in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office has confirmed the death of the 68-year-old.

Lieutenant Joe Bale, a watch commander for the coroner's office, said there was no immediate evidence leading investigators to believe Scott's death was suspicious.

He said an autopsy had not yet been performed.
